Assessment Strategies
How does a teacher tell if their students understand the content that is being covered? Many teachers test and quiz students to see if they understand what has been taught. This standard addresses the notion that testing students is the only way to check for understanding. Effective teachers use a variety of ways to assess student understanding. Assessments do not have to always be formal. There are a variety of informal assessments that can be performed to determine how well students understand the content. Effective teachers can find a balance of these formal and informal assessments while not using the same type of assessment every time. This is an area I feel I can improve in. I try to assess students as much as I can, but I feel that I use weekly quizzes as my main assessment too much. I have a hard time finding good informal assessments that I feel are effective forms of assessments. I have used things like ticket out the doors, warm up questions, and Kahoot quizzes. I have used these to help me know where my students are and use the results to see how I should progress through the lesson as well as how to group students during activities so that they can help each other in making understandings of the content. I feel that if I were able to include more informal assessments I would be able to understand where my students are. This is something I plan to improve upon over the years. I think this will be one of the best tools for me in my teaching career and it will help my students make better understandings. I would like to make this truly a strong point in my teaching.
