Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death. -Albert Einstein
Planning for instruction is possibly the most important thing a teacher does. A teacher needs to be able to understand what the content standards address and be able to transfer those standards into an effective lesson. The teacher must understand what should be taught, how it should be taught, and how the students should be assessed for understanding from the lesson. All of these aspects should be addressed by the teacher before planning even begins and should influence how the teacher plans for learning in the classroom. I feel I can improve in this standard. I do look at the standards and teach according to what is in the standards. I try to let the standards drive what I teach. I do try to determine how the students should learn the content before I begin teaching the content. However, I do tend to change activities as I progress through the lesson depending on how well I feel like the students are understanding the content we are covering. The area I feel that I do not do well here is in the assessments. I usually try to quiz my students every week over the content we covered during the week. I try to include as many assessments as possible without all the assessments being quizzes. I have tried to do smaller informal assessments to check for understanding. I can do better in this area and plan to work on this as I continue into my teaching career. I plan to research and collaborate with other teachers to find better ways to assess students’ past quizzes, formative assignments. I would like to be able to incorporate more assessments like ticket out the doors and warm ups to help assess student understandings.
