Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death. -Albert Einstein
One of the biggest factors in a teacher’s effectiveness is their ability to engage students in a variety of methods to help facilitate learning in the classroom. The way a teacher instructs their class should be determined by a variety of factors. A teacher should know their students, the content, and what the students should know from the standards. If a teacher doesn’t change the way they present material to students, then the students will become bored with the ways they learn the material. It is also important that the students are engaged in the learning. If students are not engaged, then they will not learn the material well. I feel I do a good job of this at times, but I could do better. I try to not lecture students as much as I can, and when I do I try to not lecture for more than 15 minutes or so, as well as trying to expand on the PowerPoint instead of just reading off the PowerPoint. I try to tell stories that connect to the content and make real-world connections to help engage students during notes. I also try to take into consideration what my students like. I know my students like WebQuests, so I try to work a WebQuest in every so often because I know they will work well on these because they like doing them. I also try to have the students do activities that have them get up and move around to engage in learning or use manipulatives to help in the students’ learning. I plan to research more types of instructional strategies to use in the classroom. I also plan to collaborate with other teachers to see if there are any strategies they have used that seemed to work well for them and determine if it would be of value to my students. I plan to work on this aspect of teaching until I retire.
