Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death. -Albert Einstein
Differentiated instruction is important in today’s classrooms. No two students learn the same, some students struggle with certain tasks, where other students excel in those same aspects. Some students struggle with the language of science, so it is vital that a teacher meet the needs of these students, while still challenging other students who perform at a high level in the classroom. Differentiation is being able adapt lessons to meet all students at their different levels of understanding and meet their learning needs. I think I do decently well with this rubric, but I can learn to make differentiation more individualized. I have had a student in my classroom who struggles with English. He is an ESOL student who does not speak English well, and can read English better than he can write it. It has been a challenge to differentiate for him. I have made decisions on my overall lesson to accommodate for him and have let these decisions spill over to the instruction of the other students. I have made a few assignments that help with vocabulary for him. I feel I have done some differentiation I feel was good for my students, but I do not feel I have a great grasp on how to differentiate for all students yet, which is a point I plan to work on throughout my career. I want to continue to research ways to differentiate, and make sure I continue to understand my students and their needs for learning. I would like to incorporate more student choice into my lessons that include assignments and assessments that meet more levels of understanding. I feel this would help students challenge themselves and take more responsibility for their learning.
