Professional Knowledge

Adequate knowledge of the content a teacher is teaching is an important tool to help direct instruction.  This standard address how teachers use their knowledge of their content and how they use that to instruct students. If a teacher has a deep understanding of their content they will be able to ask more higher order questions and create more complex activities that challenge students. I feel I do fairly well with this standard in my biology classroom. Due to my college education, I did not take but two biology classes and they were not general classes. This made it to where I did not learn some concepts of biology in college. However, much of what I learned in college can connect to the concepts of high school biology. I have been able to use this fact to help engage students to look at the biology standards in a way that connects more to them and how the things we talk about in class affect their bodies and their overall health. While my knowledge about biology does not reach into all of the smaller intricacies of the subject, I have been able to connect the subject to more real-world situations.  To compensate for my limited biology knowledge, I have had to look at the standards to see what they cover, and before I begin planning for my lessons, I do research to freshen up on the topic, and write down notes making sure to hit parts that I feel the standard wants to be emphasized to the students. I will keep these notes with me when I teach so I know I don’t miss information. I am working to further my understanding of biology overall. My note taking has helped, but I will also read research articles to learn more of the intricate workings of the topics we cover in class.
